Modular synthesis

Following close reading of Allen Strange’s Electronic Music (1st ed. 1972) and growing excitement at discovering the cybernetics of Gordon Pask, I spent some time working with modular synthesis. The first work investigated ‘self-generating’ synth patches – modular setups that play themselves. This led to the piece The Thing Breathed, which is not self-generating since it requires a performer, but built on some of the principles and setups of the precursor self-generating work, primarily the use of multiple nested and interdependent feedback loops.
